Kristen (Ortman) Maines just completed her eighth season as head coach of the women's tennis program in 2019-20, after being promoted to lead the program on August 23, 2012. Maines has led the Bulls to a pair of MAC Championships in 2017 and 2018.
Overall, Maines has completed her 15th season on staff with two stints as an assistant coach and one as the Coordinator of Tennis Operations. Maines has completed 17 seasons as a member of the UB tennis program as she was a four-year letterwinner for Twist before graduating in 2006.
Maines is second in school history in career wins as she has an overall record of 105-53. She earned her 100th career victory on Feb. 8, 2020 at Youngstown State.
The 2019-20 season was one of the most impressive for Maines before it was cut short due to the COVID-19 situation. With a roster that consisted of five new players, the Bulls were 10-2 in dual action. Overall, the team was 93-32 in singles with three players that had 15 or more singles victories. The team was also 42-21 overall in doubles action.
After guiding the Bulls to the best program in school history in 2017-18, Maines was named the Wilson/ITA Northeast Coach of the Year and the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year. Buffalo went 17-4 on the season, including a perfect 8-0 in the Mid-American Conference. UB won its first ever MAC Regular Season Title and won the Tournament crown for a second straight year. The Bulls entered the NCAA Tournament with a 14-match winning streak, tied for second best in the nation. The Bulls finished the year with a 145-49 record in singles action, including four players with over 20 wins, and 60-26 in doubles.
In her first season as head coach, Maines led the Bulls to a 10-match winning streak to open the season. UB went on to qualify for the MAC Tournament after winning its final two regular-season matches.
In 2013-14, Maines guided UB to its first MAC Tournament semifinal since 2009-10. The Bulls' season ended with a 15-6 record, the most victories since 2006-07.
The Bulls closed out the 2015 regular season picking up a must-win victory over Northern Illinois to secure a spot in the postseason. Maines guided UB to its third straight MAC Tournament appearance under her tutelage, while coaching freshman Tanja Stojanovska to MAC Freshman of the Year accolades.
In 2015-16, Maines led the Bulls to another successful season, narrowly missing a trip to the MAC Championship after a 4-3 defeat by the eventual MAC Champion Ball State in the MAC Semifinals. The Bulls went 14-8 on the year, including 5-3 in conference play. They were the only team during the regular season to defeat Ball State. Following the season, Stojanovska was named to the All-MAC First Team and Chantal Martinez Blanco was named to the All-MAC Second Team.
The Bulls defeated Akron, Western Michigan, and Miami to claim to the tournament title in 2016-17 and the Bulls went to the NCAA Tournament where they took on Ohio State. Both Stojanvoska and Martinez Blanco earned All-League honors.
Maines graduated with school records for most career singles wins and most career doubles wins. She compiled a 59-38 singles mark and a 59-41 doubles record, culminating her career with a season-best 19 victories in both singles and doubles play in 2005-06.
A team captain on the court, Maines also excelled in the classroom, earning Academic All-MAC honors in 2006 and being named to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Scholar-Athlete list in 2004 and 2005. She also earned membership into UB's Mortar Board Society and Golden Key International Honour Society.
A Western New York native, Maines graduated from Amherst High School in 2002. She earned her bachelor's degree in early childhood education from UB in 2006 and a master's degree in higher education administration in 2008.
